The need to supplement the personnel welfare provisions stipulated in the Terms and Conditions of Service for the Nigerian Air force (NAF) personnel was a major reason the Nigerian Air Force established the Nigerian Air force Welfare Scheme (NAFWIS) in 1989. Incorporated as a limited liability company in 1991, NAFWIS was primarily mandated to provide mutual insurance cover to NAF personnel. It was also to provide financial compensation to families of deceased personnel, assist in boosting personnel morale and provide welfare amenities in NAF Bases. An evaluation of NAFWIS performance since its establishment revealed that it recorded good results in the aspect of consolatory financial compensation but poor achievements in the other areas. NAFWIS inability to meet expectations in the other areas was attributed to narrow income generating capacity and lack of management autonomy to facilitate quick investment decision-making.
These reasons and the need to regenerate the welfare arm of the NAF necessitated the incorporation of the NAF Foundation as the successor to the NAFWIS. NAF Foundation is a corporate body limited by guarantee and incorporated in June 2006. It is mandated to expand on the welfare services hitherto rendered to NAF personnel by NAFWIS and be responsive to the demands of a competitive economic environment.
